Sony Computer Entertainment Japan have announced TALKMAN
– a voice recognition device for PlayStation Portable.TALKMAN connects a microphone to the PSP’s USB port, which then clips onto the top of the PSP. It will come bundled with software giving provision for 4 languages, Japanese, Chinese, English and Korean. It is also rumoured that the device can be used to learn a new language! More information on this innovation from Sony will be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show. It’s release will be on the 17th November this year, probably only in Japan for the moment. It will cost just under 6,000 Yen, which is around 50 USD. This kind of peripheral will add depth to the PSP experience, and may lead the way for something as crazy as a PSP camera.

for an idea of how it might be used, see some fun ads.. like this one, and this one
apart from the exciting uses of translation software.. this also means a mic is *finally* available for the PSP.. meaning that a VOIP app is now very, very possible.. someone is sure to write a homebrew app for it, which in turn should force Sony to release an official firmware upgrade to support it (just like with teh browser)..
the PSP just gets better and better..
