Fire escapes are a lost art. Although apartment owners attached these tiered ladders to apartments to create additional exit routes, fire escapes became additional balconies for many apartment-dwellers. As residents sat outside in the summer, streets became more well-watched. After fire code changed to ensure all new buildings had two interior stairwells, fire escapes began disappearing from the American lexicon.
