Deviant vs Mainstream Globalization in Australia’s irregular maritime arrival problem

Australian PM, Kevin Rudd and co keep framing this in the language of capitalism. They’re ruining the business model of ‘the people smugglers’. That is their solution to *stop the boats*.

The People Smugglers, filling busted up boats for a one-way trip to or near enough to, the Australian shore that they can claim asylum, are an example of deviant globalisation (go read more here http://www.google.com/search?q=deviant+globalization).

What’s evident is that to get the refugees through Indonesia, they’re bribing police and officials and whoever else they need to pay to make it happen. Its ongoing because it’s good for the people, good for the economy.

Now, it’s become highly political in Australia because the Opposition party have made it their principal attack and the media have feed it for ratings (their own self-interest, their core business).

But, as is clear, worse than them “stealing Australian jobs" and other manifestations of xenophobia, its feeding the coffers of Serco. Not the local economies of the Pacific Islands roped in as proxy states. Not the minimum wage workers. All from the Federal Budget paid for by those same xenophobic patriots.

And nobody is protesting, or even really talking about this at all. Certainly not in the voluminous space dedicated to this, that large echo chamber…. there’s not a peep.

Like: is Serco making campaign contributions?

What is the exact nature of the relationship between this multinational and Australia’s government, and the members of its political parties and their families?

Because they may demonize the opportunistic entrepreneurs cashing in on desperate people fleeing from the worst places in Earth… but the real scum are those making 100s $M on this and their happy shareholders.
