A selection of incredible portraits from photographer Charles Fréger’s collection and book Wilder Mann, documenting the ancient pagan rites still being practiced throughout Europe today.

From the New York Times Lens blog:

About 10,000 years ago, humans began domesticating wild animals for both food and companionship. Over the course of centuries, animal species were bred for traits that made them docile and more useful to their masters. But as humans changed and fenced in animals, they were also domesticating themselves. The skills needed to survive in the wild were different than those needed to succeed in more complex social arrangements.

Mr Fréger was intrigued by the transformations of human being to beast that he witnessed in 18 European countries. They were, he said, celebrations of fertility, life and death and symbolized the complicated relationship between mankind and nature.

Dear Tumblr user-base:

Now that I have achieved the impressive tipping-point of 20,000 Tumblr followers, my contractual arrangement with Tumblr GmbH requires me to upgrade my activities here at brucesterling.tumblr.com.

Our new policy is for your own good, because, without clearer IP policies and some monetization, you, the user-base, may well find yourselves sadly deprived of the lickable street-art posters and the UFO cattle abductions on which all twenty thousand of you have come to depend.  None of us want that.

Therefore, in the future, our daily cavalcade of sourceless ripped-off graphic whimsy will  also carry some branding — tactful visual inserts quite similar to those found here in my brand-new, official “Tumblr-Maestro” formal studio portrait.  I think you’ll agree that this pic looks pretty fucking classy.  It does, right?  Feel free to heart it and forward it.

Mind you, these branding inserts will come from only the very coolest tech companies — the out-there, with-it, inventive guys who are involved in tech developments that I myself sincerely find interesting, awesome cutting-edge outfits such as Parasight, Uber, TagWhat, GoPro, Dysonics, Vintank, Plantronics, Epiphany — gosh there sure are a lot of them — ElectricFoxy, Memoto, Wolfram Alpha, and our special guest sponsor, Zuta Osa (Yellow Wasp) all-natural Serbian Plum Brandy.

I will continue to wear Missoni at no extra charge.  That’s because the “Missoni” brand, unlike most fashion corporations, is some actual family of real Italians who are genuinely named “Missoni.”

To assist in this new arrangement,  Tumblr Gmbh has kindly assigned me a secretary and business manager, Miss Tesanovic  (seen above).  The charming Miss T. will be answering your business email around the brucesterling.tumblr.com small-office/home-office, while I redouble my efforts to pitchfork some sticky-eyeball content into the Tumblr maw.

Here’s to a prosperous second quarter of 2013!
