Nick Knight, ‘Susie Smoking’, 1988
I saw this image in a magazine in a bookstore in Reno, Nevada. I was sixteen, living in a trailer park on an Indian Reservation in the middle of the desert. I was a dirt poor mohawked skatepunk, about to run away from home. The moment I saw this I went from being an aspiring painter to an aspiring photographer. It’s the visual doorway that led me to where I am today. One of my guiding lights.
If anybody out there is shopping for my Christmas presents, this big print is going on Auction on November 22, and would exempt you from ever having to buy me any presents again forever. Auction estimate a mere $20-30k. (thanks, Susannah!)
