Continuum 7 – Changing Consciousness

Back for 20!!, this year’s Continuum will literately blow your mind! Guests of Honour Dave Freer and Cat Valente assured me it would be the case. Apart from liaising with these fine pre-posthumans, I am once again on several panels:

  • 80s & 90s Weird

Stop-motion latex freakery.. From Alex Cox’s Repo Man and its car of doom! (it happens, ya know, people just explode) to Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch of Mogwump jism, only Buckaroo Banzai can save us in his borrowed DeLorean.

  • Do Uploads Dream of Electric Sheep?

Artificial Intelligence: not the likes of HAL9000 or C3-P0, but transference of human consciousness to an artificial container. Cylons, Cybermen, Raelians, Max Headroom and Ghosts in the Shell. Come and explore the possibilities.

  • In praise of The Prisoner

A discussion of the classic ’60s television show. Are we now numbers or still free men?

  • Foreign SF Films

Before you run into that Tarantino-wannabe at your next party, bone up on obscure indies SF films that only made it into English as fan-subs. Mexican cyberpunk, South Korean monster movies and at least one Japanese / Polish co-production.

  • Welcome to the Internet, pop. ??

The Internet is a foreign country, we do things differently there. Explore what it means to be a citizen of the internet. Do we have rights, and what are our responsibilities? Who holds the power and who’s oppressed? Or is the internet just for piracy and porn?

Five panels over four days and only two guests to keep track of.. how hard can that be?! (Back to 11th hour preparations)
